Mayo Campus Library

Open until 8pm, Mon-Thurs from next Monday 1st December.

Winning poem for 'A Poem for GMIT'

The winning poem for A Poem for GMIT is 'Digging' by Seamus Heaney.

I presume many would agree with the thoughts of one of those who voted for this poem: 'The last line sums up what education, curiosity and the search for new perspectives is all about : Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests. I'll dig with it'.

The top three poems were:
1. Digging by Seamus Heaney
2. For a New Beginning by John O'Donohue
3. Mid-term Break by Seamus Heaney

We really appreciate everybody taking the time to send in their choices.

Many thanks,

EThOS - Open Access to UK theses

EThOS is the UK’s national thesis service which aims to maximise the visibility and availability of the UK’s doctoral research theses.

EThOS aims to provide:
  • A national aggregated record of all doctoral theses awarded by UK Higher Education institutions
  • Free access to the full text of as many theses as possible for use by all researchers to further their own research.

There are approximately 350,000 records relating to theses awarded by over 120 institutions. Around 120,000 of these also provide access to the full text thesis, either via download from the EThOS database or via links to the institution’s own repository. Of the remaining 250,000 records dating back to at least 1800, three quarters are available to be ordered for scanning through the EThOS digitisation-on-demand facility.

Records are held for all UK PhD-awarding institutions, but we do not (yet) hold all records for all institutions. Every month around 3000 new records are added and an additional 2000 full text theses become accessible. Access routes to the full text are determined by the individual institution and may depend on:

  • Mandatory electronic deposit of newly awarded theses by its students
  • Availability of its theses in the institutional repository
  • Its level of repository development
  • Digitisation priorities for its print theses

To access the freely available online theses click 'Limit search to items available for immediate download from EThOS or the Institution' otherwise there maybe a charge for the scanning process (currently £44.37 + VAT £8.87 = Total £53.24). Details are provided within each record.

ProQuest Research Companion - Trial

Our latest free trial is ProQuest Research Companion.

A new cloud-based information literacy solution for student researchers and educators that guides students through the research process and helps them develop their critical thinking and information literacy skills.

Studies have shown that today's researchers are unequivocally overwhelmed with too much information and data—throughout all the stages of research process. Developed by writing instructors and librarians, Research Companion combines multimedia-based learning modules and powerful quick-start evaluator tools into one resource.

The Learning Modules are organized into easily digestible sections and are structured as nine commonly asked researcher questions which provide a foundation and context for finding, evaluating, and using information. The modules cover such topics as "Where do I start?" to "How do I avoid plagiarism and find my own voice?" to “What’s the best way to revise?” They are delivered as a series of visually compelling and inventive videos, or in a full-text, readable format and are written in a conversational style that improves learning outcomes and maximizes retention.

You can access the trial on campus until the 11 December 2014 using this address:
